swimming poolMany insects are attracted to large bodies of water because they provide hydration and a place for the insects to breed. If you have a swimming pool in your backyard, it could draw in more bugs than you’re prepared for. Before your home gets overwhelmed with bugs, follow the tips below to learn how to keep insects away from your pool.

Get a Pool Cover

A pool cover could do a lot for your home. It will prevent leaves from getting into the pool, and it will prevent insects from getting in at night. If you have an above-ground pool, the cover will look a lot like an oversized shower cap. Make sure you have that on the top as tight as possible so it doesn’t get blown away or taken. If you have an in-ground pool, you will need to spend more money to get a rolling cover to reach across the pool.

Put a Net around the Pool

Hanging mosquito netting around your pool will block out most flying insects. In order to do this, you will need a large umbrella or canopy that you can attach the netting to. This may not be an issue around a kiddie pool or an above ground pool, but it could be for a large in-ground pool. If you find a way to attach the netting, make sure the areas you attach it with are extremely secure. These critters can find holes in even the smallest of spaces.

Clean up Freestanding Puddles of Water

If you notice puddles of water in your yard, get rid of them right away. It does not take long for a mosquito to turn that into its nest. Dog bowls and overturn buckets are prime examples of areas that collect water, even if they seem unfit for insects. Dump these out quickly and watch out for new deposits every time it rains. You will likely find new collections to get rid of.
