Tired of getting bugs in your house? Wish there was an easy way to get rid of them all? Of course, a thorough pest control service could do the trick, but there are other things you can do to keep the bugs away. Here are some simple tips for minimizing the pests in your home.

Keep the Door Shut

This one seems obvious, but most of us do not realize just how much we leave the doors open in our homes. For instance, what do you do when you have a pizza delivered? Do you step outside to sign papers and get the boxes, or do you stand in your doorway? Most of us just leave the door open so a whole slew of bugs can get in. you can stop that by shutting the door as often as possible. Try to grab everything you need before you go outside so you don’t have a lot of back and forth traffic. This practice alone will dramatically reduce your bug problems.

Turn the Lights Off

Specifically, turn the lights off outside when it is night time. These lights attract all sorts of insects, and they can actually bring bugs into your home over time. If you are worried about robbers in the area, get motion detecting lights that will come on whenever someone walks by. That way you still get protection without having a spotlight calling the insects in. You could also consider an insect light that will kill the bugs on contact. If you have to have light out there, this may be the only way to go.

Keep the Floors Clean

Bugs can smell food crumbs on the floor, even if you appear to have a clean home. Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming on a regular basis will eliminate the main reasons why most insects come into a home. They want warmth and shelter, but they also want a source of food. If you prevent them from detecting that food, you won’t have to worry about them coming in.

Seal the Crevices

A bug does not need much space to get into your home. The tiniest of gaps could let in a whole family of spiders within a matter of minutes. Every six months or so, go around your home and reseal seams linked to the exterior of the home. Baseboards, doorframes, and windows are some of the most common entry points for bugs. You can use caulk, weather stripping, or silicone to get the job done, depending on what you are trying to seal. If you think a bug could get through, create a barricade to prevent it.

Check Everything You Bring in

Before you bring a box or bag into your home, make sure it does not have any bugs in it. This is especially true if you are bringing in items from a garage or storage unit. If you have been outside a lot, you may want to have a family member look over your clothing to make sure you have nothing on you. If you do, get it off before you get inside. Everything you bring into your home should be bug free, even if that means spending five extra minutes looking over it outside. That time will be worth the stress relief you have in your house.
